I set out in my Jeep Gladiator to the South Eastern corner of Oregon to visit the Alvord Desert, which is ancient dry lake bed that sites at the best of the 10,000 foot Steens Mountain. The reason I went there was to meet and camp with a group of Strangers for my first ever Patreon Campout. Over the weekend we took offroad trails to find new lakebeds in the area, had a potluck where everyone brought something delicious to share, and enjoyed meeting new people while enjoying the outdoors and camping. This weekend also took place while the solar eclipse was happening.

The group had about 13 rigs in it with Fords, Toyotas, Nissans, and of course Jeeps. After getting to know each other around the campfire the first night, we got up the next day to watch the solar eclipse, even thought it was obscured by the cloud cover of an overcast day on the Alvord Desert. Much of the group decided to go with my to find another, smaller dry lakebed called Coyote Lake. The overlanding convoy had to navigate through other camping sites to find the trailhead to Coyote Lake, and we noticed some of the campers were not clothed, which made for an interesting drive. The trail split the desert bluffs and lead straight into the heart of the Eastern Oregon Desert. Unfortunately the group hit private land gates and turned around to head back to the Alvord Desert, and then to Fields Station for Gas, burgers, and milkshakes.

Back the Alvord Desert Camping area, the group decided to have a potluck, where everyone brought a special dish to share with the group. The food was delicious with some people using their camp stoves to cook chicken curry, stuffed peppers, and others used dutch ovens to cook casseroles.

The next morning provided an amazing sunrise, with the clouds lit up in dark orange colors as the sun rose over the desert mountains. The overland group packed up their gear, said their goodbyes and promised to meet up again some day.

My Most Useful Overlanding Gear | Camping Gear Guide 2023

15.2K views November 25, 2023 6:31 pm

We built a new overlanding route across Oregon from East to West. This route started in McCall Idaho where the group of overlanders met up and prepared for the 6 day journey across the state. During the first day the convoy of Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators dropped down the Idaho side of Hells Canyon via Kleinschmidt road, crossed over the Snake River, and then drove up the Oregon side of Hells Canyon. With severe rain forecasted in the weather, the group heads down to the banks of the Imnaha river to Coverdale campground, which had enough space for all 5 of our Jeeps. The night the rain hit hard and we had to deploy our awning to take shelter while making dinner. The next morning brought even colder weather and the threat of more rain, so the overland convoy rolled out across the Hells Canyon Recreation Area to Joseph, Oregon before darting back to the Northwest side of the Wallowa mountains. At the top of a long rocky road was a fire lookout called Point Prominence that offered unobstructed views of the Wallowa Wilderness Area and the snow capped peaks that make up the mountain range. As the group continued past the fire lookout, the trail turned muddy and snowy and since two of the Jeep were running on stock suspensions and one of them pulling an off road trailer, the group had to turn back. At this point they were racing against the weather and made a late night, last minute call to stay in a hotel. The next morning the convoy headed to Baker City Oregon to attempt the drive over the Elkhorn Mountains. As Jeeps approached the top of the mountain, the trail had hard packed spring snow which was cause to get out the recovery shovels and traction boards to make sure all the rigs traversed the sketchy road safely. On the other side of the mountain a mudslide had destroyed parts of the road so the overlanders were forced to use their traction boards once again to make sure all the rigs made it through without accidents. That night the convoy passed into the Eastern Oregon Desert and stayed near the Little Malheur River. A few hours into the next day, the Jeeps hit their first real water crossing, but quickly reached locked gates and had to do a major back track in order to rejoin the route in Burns, Oregon. From Burns, the group headed into the desert again, but had to reroute due to severe lightning storms. The night was spend at a low point in an open field hoping the storm would miss, which it did. The following day consisted of very slow progress through the eastern and central oregon desert wastelands with nothing but sage brush and cattle for miles. Eventually the group made it back the route and disperse camped at the oregon sunstone collection area where we deployed our rooftop tents and other camping gear to settle in for the night. The next day the group finished the trek across the Oregon desert and arrived in Paisley oregon, where they were informed that the roads they planned to take were closed due to severe washouts. With time fading quickly, the group decided to drive 6 hours on pavement to reach Florence, Oregon and the Silt Coos dispersed sand camping area. They arrived at the Oregon coast just as the sun was setting and the journey was complete.
